=== Witnesses === Afraid of being kidnapped and missing Mendonça, one of the boy's friend at school tried to commit suicide, two months after the disappearance. In the crime's reconstitution, Dias could not explain what he did between 14 (2 P.M) and 18 (6 P.M) hours on the day Mendonça disappeared. With the reconstitution it was proven that the investigation let leads and important witnesses slip by. The inspectors did not want to explain to the press the reason why they devalued Alcina Dias' testimony. A man that worked in a gas station guaranteed that at the time of the disappearance he saw Mendonça, in the centre of the village of Lousada, walking next to two other boys. The court questioned the witness about his statements to the GNR the day following the disappearance, where he said he saw two children passed by on bikes, but that neither was Mendonça. The witness insisted that he could not remember giving the testimony to GNR, even thought his signature was in the records. They also heard a witness that said they saw Mendonça's bicycle at 16 (4 P.M) hours. Without being identified, a boy that was 14 at the time of the disappearance, told RTP that PJ did not value the different testimonies given to the police. The witness, along with four other young people, was waiting for Mendonça to arrive to play football. When Mendonça got there he said he was not going to play anymore, hid his bike and got in the car. In 2003, in the Casa Pia Process, a man said that he was with Mendonça in a pension for sexual meetings, in the end of January 2001.

=== New defence team === In September 2024, Letby appointed a new defence lawyer, Mark McDonald. At a press conference in December 2024, McDonald said he was preparing fresh applications to both the Court of Appeal and the Criminal Cases Review Commission. He argued that the prosecution's lead expert witness, Dewi Evans, was unreliable, claiming that Evans had altered his views on how some infants had died. McDonald also said that several experts were producing reports on the infants' deaths without payment, and that two reports—relating to Children C and O—had concluded that there was no evidence of deliberate harm. Following the press conference, Evans rejected the criticisms, describing them as "unsubstantiated, unfounded, inaccurate". He said the only change in his evidence concerned the date of Child C's death, which he attributed to a clerical error by the prosecution. Some of Evans's post‑trial comments about the mechanisms of death differed from positions he had taken while giving evidence at trial. On 4 February 2025, Letby's legal team applied for her case to be reviewed as a potential miscarriage of justice. On the same day, findings from a panel of 14 international medical experts were released. == Early life == Born in Boston, Massachusetts, as the only son of Janice (née Hare) and Robert Bagwell, Jeff Bagwell and his family moved to Killingworth, Connecticut, when he was one year old. Much of Bagwell's family is from the Greater Boston area, including both his parents, and are avid fans of the Boston Red Sox. His favorite baseball player, Carl Yastrzemski, was a longtime left fielder for the Red Sox. Robert, from Watertown, pitched college baseball at Northeastern University and as a semi-professional. Janice, a police officer, grew up in Newton and played softball in local Boston leagues until her 20s. Bagwell's parents divorced when he was 11. Precocious and demonstrating much athletic ability early in life, he played a wide variety of sports as a youth. Recalled Janice, Jeff "could throw a ball before he could walk. When he was six months old, we'd throw a ball to him and he would throw it back." Bagwell graduated from Xavier High School, a private all-male Catholic school located in Middletown, Connecticut.
