=== Militias === Brazilian milicias (militias), or paramilitary groups, consisting of current and retired police officers, prison guards, and military members, control much of the western territory of Rio de Janeiro and continue to expand their territory through turf wars with ADA, TCP and CV, both in Rio and in other states, such as São Paulo and the northeast. Militia groups have grown in size and power rapidly, originating in the early 2000s and growing to control highly populated areas since. Founded as vigilante groups, they've amassed enough power as to dominate and extort entire territories of Rio de Janeiro. Along with extortion methods, the groups have gained political influence and have even been previously supported by high-profile politicians, such as former president Jair Bolsonaro. Unlike the other criminal organizations such as CV and ADA, who have always highly invested in the drug market, militias positioned themselves against drug trafficking in order to gain community approval and trust, with some favela residents seeing them as the "lesser evil" of crime as compared to drug gangs. Instead of drug trafficking, the groups participate in extortion, controlling civilian access to gas, land, and cable television. Recently, some groups have decided to expand to allowing drug dealing within their territories or are doing so themselves, leveraging profit and control of important territories from drug gangs.

Post-SSRI sexual dysfunction (PSSD) is an iatrogenic condition in which sexual side effects persist after discontinuation of serotonin reuptake inhibiting antidepressants, including fluvoxamine. A 2023 retrospective cohort study of over 12,000 males estimated the risk of irreversible sexual dysfunction at approximately 0.46% of patients treated with serotonergic antidepressants, including SSRIs, though the actual prevalence remains uncertain and the condition is likely underreported. A 2023 systematic review noted that while data on fluvoxamine is more limited than for some other SSRIs, it was included in the EMA's class-wide signal assessment and cases have been reported with SNRIs, SRI tricyclic antidepressants, and other serotonin reuptake inhibiting drugs in addition to SSRIs. The clinical signs of PAM are similar to bacterial and viral meningitis, including fever, neck stiffness, and severe headaches. Symptoms can progress to prolonged nausea, vomiting, and even seizures. Successful treatment of PAM is rare; treatment can only be attempted after correct diagnosis, which relies on rapid recognition of the microorganism by medical technologists and pathologists. It is critical that medical technologists consistently provide timely CSF evaluation, explore the diagnosis of PAM, and look for amoebae in the setting of meningitis, especially in summer.

A vaccine vial monitor (VVM) is a time temperature indicator put on vials containing vaccines which gives a visual indication of whether the vaccine has been kept at a temperature which preserves its potency. A VVM slowly changes color as it is exposed to heat, accelerating as the environment gets hotter. The VVM helps healthcare workers determine a vaccine left out of the cold chain is still effective. Many of vaccines can survive days even at a scorching 40 °C (104 °F), but without a VVM there is no way to tell whether a vaccine has been destroyed by spending too many days sitting hot. The VVM provides that information and allows this type of operation (controlled temperature chain) to be safely conducted. This is especially important when delivering vaccines to developing countries where the cold chain is difficult to preserve.

== Approval == The patch was granted a license from the European Medicines Agency in July, and is available on Britain's National Health Service from March 2007. However, in December 2004 the United States the 14-member Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory committee, plus voting consultants, for Reproductive Health Drugs unanimously rejected Procter and Gamble's fast-track request for Intrinsa citing concerns about off-label use. In Canada, post-menopausal women have been able to obtain government-approved testosterone treatment since 2002. In Australia, post-menopausal women can use Organon testosterone implants which have to be surgically inserted and last from three to six months.
== Charges == On October 20, 2017, a week after the prison attack, the four prisoners – 28-year-old Mikel Brady, 29-year-old Wisezah Buckman, 30-year-old Jonathan Monk and 33-year-old Seth Frazier – were charged with murder for the killings they committed throughout the attack. In June 2018, it was confirmed that all the four accused would undergo separate trials for the 2017 prison murders. On October 13, 2018, District Attorney Andrew Womble confirmed that he would seek the death penalty for all the four inmates. Under North Carolina state law, the death penalty was the maximum sentence for first degree murder.
Denys performed another transfusion into a labourer, who also survived. Both instances were likely due to the small amount of blood that was actually transfused into these people. This allowed them to withstand the allergic reaction. Denys's third patient to undergo a blood transfusion was Swedish Baron Gustaf Bonde. He received two transfusions. After the second transfusion Bonde died. In the winter of 1667, Denys performed several transfusions on Antoine Mauroy with calf's blood. On the third account Mauroy died. Six months later in London, Lower performed the first human transfusion of animal blood in Britain, where he "superintended the introduction in [a patient's] arm at various times of some ounces of sheep's blood at a meeting of the Royal Society, and without any inconvenience to him." The recipient was Arthur Coga, "the subject of a harmless form of insanity." Sheep's blood was used because of speculation about the value of blood exchange between species; it had been suggested that blood from a gentle lamb might quiet the tempestuous spirit of an agitated person and that the shy might be made outgoing by blood from more sociable creatures. Coga received 20 shillings (equivalent to £206 in 2025) to participate in the experiment. Lower went on to pioneer new devices for the precise control of blood flow and the transfusion of blood; his designs were substantially the same as modern syringes and catheters. Shortly after, Lower moved to London, where his growing practice soon led him to abandon research.
=== Train of four ratio test === The train of four ratio (i.e., ToFr) is a neuromuscular test for monitoring neuromuscular function (see monitoring neuromuscular blockade). In this test, a peripheral nerve (most commonly the ulnar nerve) is stimulated by an electrical impulse 4 times (i.e., T1, T2, T3, T4) and the strength of contraction is measured in a muscle(s) (i.e., the abductor pollicis longus and brevis muscles for the ulnar nerve). The ratio of the amplitude of muscle contraction in response to the fourth impulse (T4) divided by the amplitude of muscle contraction in response to the first impulse is calculated. The ratio of these two contractions should be 1.0. Values less than this are regarded as abnormal. ToFr is used to determine when the effects of an administered neuromuscular-blocking drug have worn off (see postoperative residual curarization) or as the most objective, accurate, and sensitive test for determining the presence and severity of myasthenia gravis: myasthenia gravis is considered to afflict the tested muscle if its ToFr ratio (i.e., T4/T1) is less than 0.9.
